I bought a 93 Chevy Lumina Euro 4 door, 3.4L V6 for my girl friend. I brought it to my mechanic and this is what he said needs to be done to pass the safety. I want to know which parts i should be able to change myself (i have the Haynes Manual for the car) and which ones i should leave him do.
Rear Brakes and Calipers
Spark Plug Wire( had trouble starting it after going to car wash, he said it was still the original wires on it)
Tie Rod
Lower Ball joints
Spring Insulator
E-Brake Cable (he said it was sticking)
also he said the the Fuel and Brake lines should be changes within the nex year or so.
any advise on how to do this would be great. Spark plug wires for safety?
I think he went a little overboard for 'safety' but those repairs could actually need to be done.
Everything on the list sounds pertrinent for safety's sake.... except the plug wires (IMO). Perhaps even the e-brake cable could be omitted if you don't use it (and your local government doesn't require it). well the spark plug wires didn't need to be changed for the safety, that was because i took it to the car wash and used engine cleaner to clean it up before going the the car wash, and late that night it kept stalling on me. the next morning at the shop, they said it wouldn't even start up.
but besides from that, are the other jobs fairly straight forward? Your ball joints could be tricky if you have never done this kind of job before, and if they are the originals (which I bet they are!) Also, after ball joints and a new tie rod end (which by the way, IMHO, if you are going to change one, do them both) you are going to want to get the front end aligned.
