I have a 88' Astro Van with a V6 in it. It has about 130k on it.
After putting a new stereo in, I started getting an intermitent (sp?) short that causes the inj. fuse to blow, which stops the car from running or starting. (will turn over but won't start)
I take the stereo out, and it still blows fuses. Right now it's gone from happening every once and a while, usually when I go over a bump, too now it blowing the fuse every time. It's like a dead short, and I've done a lot of wire wiggling to no avail.
I can't figure out what's all on that circuit, though I know that the stereo isn't.
Any help, would be greatly appreciated, as it's sitting next to the road with dash torn appart, right now
Thanks,
Justin I assume INJ. is your abbreviation for injectors. You have the right idea, that of inspection all the wiring in this circuit. You must also obtain a wiring diagram to see whatever other units use this circuit. Then disconnect them one by one to find the short. Good luck. I'm going to venture and say that the radio has probably absolutely nothing to do with this problem and that it is just a coincedince. Like steve said, you are going to need a wiring diagram, might i suggest alldata.com? Here's what I did lastnight (3AM).
I put my test light accross the fuse terminals and it lit up, no surprise there because there's a short. I wiggled every wire I could find (without taking the dog house off), and the light didn't even blink.
I put a 20amp breaker in place of the 7.5 amp fuse (I know this isn't a good idea, but sometimes you're less careful with a $300 van).
I decided that I was going to try and start it and drive it as far as it would go before the breaker tripped, then turn it off and let it reset, and go again (I was only about half a mile from home).
When I started it up, the short seemed to go away. I was able to drive it all the way home.
I would say that lends to the idea that it's a short within the dog house. Also, it probably means the radio doesn't have anything to do with it. A 20-amp circuit breaker! I like your idea very much. You still need to find the short, but clearly you know enough to proceed on your own. Good luck. Check the wires to the injectors under the air cleaner. There is a large metal spacer between the air cleaner housing and the throttle body. Sometimes the injector wiring can get pinched between the spacer and the throttle body causing a short or open in the wiring.
