I have a 1996 Lincoln Town Car that the drivers side window has ceased to function for one reason or another and I do not like to just assume that its the electric window motor. The question I have is this. Is there any way of trouble shooting this problem? I would like to test both the electronic regulator ( between the motor and the window button assembly) and then the electric window motor itself to find out which part is causing the trouble. I was thinking that there may be a way to wire past the regulator directly to the motor, but I dont know exactly how to do this...OR is it even advisable? The 1996 Town Car does not have the same electronic parts as does the '95 or the '97, so I'm not sure that I want to go out and spend a lot of money on something that I may not possibly need. ANY advice and / or instructions would be greatly appreciated.
Charlie The standard method of troubleshooting is to open an electrical connector between two units. Find the connector between the window and the electronic module and pull it apart. Identify the wires with the aid of a wiring diagram. Now you can, for example, apply 12v from a separate source to the window motor. If the motor operates, suspect the electronics. If the motor does not operate it may have failed. But first remove the door paneling and check for wire breaks. They typically occur in the door hinge area. stevefl is right. Go to the motor itself and see if you have current to the motor when switch is moved from up to down. If current is there, replace motor. If not go back to the switch and see if current is coming to the switch and out to the motor. If no current at switch, look for broken wire. Hi Stevefl,
Thank You for the response. I atttempted to follow your directions but I cannot find a wiring diagram anywhere to aid me in identifying the wires. I live in a small town 50 miles outside of Dallas Texas and there is not a Chiltons manual or any other refrence material to be had that would have what I need anywhere around this town. Do you know of any site on the net that would have any such wiring diagrams? As before, I appreciate all your help.
Way2old...Thank you also for your input. It is invaluable.
