Floating truck motion - Alignment problem?

I have a 1990 4x4 Ford Lariat 250 that is wondering all over the road when I am going faster than 40 mph. The truck feels as if it is "floating" when it moves over left or right of the road. The steering wheel can be very steady and the truck will move over on its own. The tires are fairly new and have great traction. The tie rods are tight and everything under the vehicle looks and feels solid. There is a little play in the wheel, and from past experience with other vehicles I have driven that had some play in the wheel, the vehicle never "floated" on over to either side. The truck isn't overloaded is it? The reason I ask is we have a 1982 Ford F350 Fire/Rescue Truck that does the same thing, and it is overloaded on the back.

How are your swaybar busshings and the swaybar itself? Have you had an alignment done recently? The truck will sway when empty, but it is really noticable when I am towing a small trailer. It probably has been years since the last alignment was done on the truck. I'd see about getting an alignment done...

This may be a stupid question, and I'm sure you already have done this, but are all of your front lug nuts on tight? Lug nuts are tight... I will go the route of the alignment. Thanks for your help. alignment and check if you have a shock damper on drag,if you have one it could be no more good. There is no shock damper on the truck, but I did take it in for an alignment. The person working on the truck could not set it to either "toe in or toe out", cant remember which, due to the longest tie rod having some problem. The mechanic mentioned this was a common Ford part to wear. I watched the longest tie rod as the steering wheel was turned from side to side, and when the wheel was turned to the left at the point the tires were straight forward, the rod would rotate back about 1/2 inch. Would that be enough to cause the truck to sway or "float". To give a better example, its all I can do to keep the truck straight, and its not play in the wheel.
