I did a search of the forum & couldn't find anything similar on soemthing this old. Don't know if anyone here tools around on vehicles this old or not. If not, forgive me, I am a newbie. Actually I joined a while back, just don't post much.
This is a friends truck that I am trying to help him with. It was running fine. He cut it off the other day, went back a few minutes later to start it & it would not start. There is no fire at the plugs. It has an electronic ignition and they replaced the distributor cap and the coil, still no fire. The only other thing I know of is the rotor button. Could that be the problem? Or does anyone here know if there could be an inline fuse somehwere? I looked at it briefly, but didn't have a lot of time. I am no mechanic by any means, but I was ask because I piddle around a little on cars & I am small enough to climb around under the hood and they are not. LOL It is getting gas to the carb, just no fire at the plugs. Can anyone tell me something else I may be overlooking? Perhaps it is a whole host of things I am not thinking about?
Guess I should add it is a 350, with auto tranny.
Thanks in advance. I guess this has the hei distributor. Meaning the coil is in the cap. Check that you are getting 12V+ at the B+ wire going to the dist. If not, you have a wiring issue. If so, check the module. I'm gonna lay me bet on the module being bad, it's under the cap if I remember correctly. Also has a pick up coil on the hei ignition that can really deteriorate with age and cause a no start(requires pulling the distributor and removing the shaft to replace), also make sure the rotor is turning when you crank it.
Thanks guys.
Yes it is the hei distributor with the coil in the cap.
Sorry for my ignorance, but that leads me to a couple more questions. I will check the voltage, but what is the "module" called that you are speaking of? If I were to call NAPA & ask for it, what would I ask for?
Also, I was told about the pick up coil. Someone said it would require replacing the entire distributor??? Hi Frank, this link will educate you on the HEI distributor and it's parts for this vehicle. There are links on the right side of the page for testing it's components.
The device we are talking about is the ICM.... Ignition Control Module. It is mounted inside the distributor with it's wires leading outside the distributor. They are $15 at AutoZone. Make sure you reinstall with silicone on the base of it. It acts as a heat insulator.
The one drawing refers to it as a 7 terminal module?? But it is the ICM, same thing.
