I could smell something burning the day before it went out. I tried to pin point the smell and it seemed to be from the dash. When the blower was on high the smell was worse. I smelled near the blower and could not smell what was burning. The next day I put the heater on high and the climate control in the dash went out. I checked the fuse and that seemed okay. I bought a new climate control from the dealership and that doesn't work, either. The display on the climate control does not light up. When I turn the key to run, the buttons light up as if the headlights are on, but no display. If I turn the headlights on with key in run, the buttons go out. I replaced the blower motor last spring. Don't know what else to look for to make the climate control not work. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.
hi. sounds like you need an automotive electrical shop for that one. the burning smell could have come from any number of places. it would be very difficult to give any meaningful advice on line. i wish i could see it. can you see behind the dash? do you have a wiring diagram? maybe you could identify everything that is wrong[circuts] and find a comman thread? i wish you the very best of luck. unless you can see melted wires, i recommend a specialist. let us know. sorry.
Thanks Rickm. I appreciate the feedback. I was surprised anyone responded to this problem. I can follow the wires from the unit to where the relays and the blower motor are located behind the dash. And, believe me, I had a good part of the dash taken apart. I didn't see anything melted but the wires are covered in black tape. The damage could be hidden. Also, this seems to be the only system affected. I'll probably have to take in. Thank you for the reply.
I found my problem for those who were interested. I worked on it again today and I found a wiring harness or connector located behind the dash between the climate control and the radio. 2 or 3 wires run off of the main set of wires from the climate control and go into this connector. When I moved the connector, the climate control came back on. The more I move and squeeze the connector, the more the climate control goes on and off. I'm pretty sure that is the problem and I found this completely by accident.
So, now I have to drive with my hand in the dash to stay warm until I can locate the part that I need. I also have a brand new climate control that I won't be needing. I guess that's the price of not knowing what you are doing, but it's how we learn.
Thanks, and I'm glad I found this site.Car Repair Talk's forum.
