How do I turn off ABS/Brake Light On 1998 Dodge Durango

I have a 1998 Dodge Durango (5.2 L engine) and the "ABS" and "Brake" lights both came on simultaneously yesterday. The only brake concerns I have is that they can be extremely "touchy" at times (usually when just beginning to drive for the day). For example, when pulling out of the driveway for the morning commute to work, I will bearly tap on the brakes and the entire car will come to a complete and neck-jerking stop!

The codes that came back on the diagnostic check were numbers 71 and 72.

My local mechanic said the descriptions for those codes on his computer said something along the lines of "read only--take to Dodge dealer."

He said more than likely the computer system could be outdated and just simply needs to be re-set and updated. So the dealership will hook it up to their computers and update it for around $100, but nothing is really wrong with the brakes.

Another mechanic told me over the phone that the anti-lock brake controller needs to be replaced, costing anywhere from $400-$600!!!!!

Someone else told me that possibly only a speed sensor needs to be replaced...?

I don't know what to do here, what needs to be done, and I'm strapped for money, but also want to ge those stubborn ABS and Brake lights OFF in the dash and solve any problems that it could be.

What should I do and any advice would help! Thanks in advance...

NOTE: Chrysler only provides a procedure to pull ABS Codes with a Chrysler Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) scan tool. There are no procedures provided by Chrysler to pull ABS codes with a generic scan tool or any other procedure besides using the Chrysler DRB.

That is in AlldataPro. How did your mechanic pull the codes he got?

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds The 'touchy' brake problem could/probably is just moisture on the rear brake linings/pads. Just for grins, have you checked the brake fluid to make sure it's full. If it is low, it can turn those lights on. We've had several Chrysler products that turned out to be output speed sensor problems causing ABS problems. Some have a sensor in the trans and one in the differential. I'd pass on the guy that wanted to sell you a controller over the phone. That is a rare occurance, although possible, but.... You really should have this diagnosed. On the other hand, and I probably shouldn't even suggest it, but your brakes will still work as they used to before we had anti-lock. In a panic stop, the wheels can skid, especially in degraded traction instances. IHO, anti-lock gives people an improper sense of security.."I can tail gate because I can stop faster" attitudes.

SW Washington Thank you for somuch input--I greatly appreciate it! In addition, it seems my speedometer goes through spurts where it won't work or read my speed. This usually happens during stop-and-go traffic when I've been stopped in traffic and then go again and the speedometer will take a minute to catch my speed. Any thoughts here...? Thanks!
Was just taking a look for the trans speed sensor and found this spot suggests the ABS sensor(s) as "related" parts to this. With the trans sensor now showing up as no speed indicated I would suspect that MIGHT be the issue with both ABS and the speed and cheap enough to try.

That doesn't IMO explain grabby brakes - moisture, brake fluid on drums particularly if used in this could be grabby AND might foul an ABS sensor too. Don't fool with anything that might be a brake fluid leak and get that fixed at once if so
