2000 Pont Grand Am with Trouble codes P0135 P0442

I've got a 2000 Pont Grand Am, 6cyl. 3.4 engine. About 164,000
I'm comming up with 2 trouble codes:
P0135 O2 sensor heater circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1
I have no way to check the O2 sensor- of even if that could be the problem. Your thoughts on this one. Have to pass emmisions to get new tags

and...P0442 EVAP Emission System Leak (Small)
This one has been here since I bought the car 5 years ago. I erase it and it comes back in about a month. I've passed emmisions with this one before (after I've erased it.)

I've been turning a wrench on my own cars for the last 40+ years but all this "electronic" and computer stuff is beyond me.

Help would be appreciated since the tags a now expired

JohnBoy; (Walton?) 99.9% of the time, when you get an O2 heater code, it is the sensor that needs replacing. Of course, you should make certain that you have voltage to the circuit, but like I said, it is almost always the heater element of the sensor. The small leak could be as simple as a faulty gas cap. If not, small leaks can be a real PIA to find. We use a 'Smoke Machine' to find them. It entails sealing off the EVAP system, then introducing the smoke which shows up under a black light and has a lemon scent. (okay, Jasmine wasn't available.LOL) In WA, if two readiness monitors are incomplete, you will fail the emission test, so clearing codes prior to the test won't work.
