1996 GMC Jimmy 4x4 initialization failure

Hello all I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy 2wd that the service engine soon light has came on. When I took it to Autozone they checked the code and it says it is a 4x4 initialization failure. Why does my 2wd Jimmy think its a 4x4?
It could be a software issue that something has spiked the computer into thinking it’s attached to a 4X4 or when the computer was first initialized the wrong RPO code was installed for 2 or 4 wheel drive? Why it only set a code now who knows it’s electronics. LOL
You’ll need to have the computer scanned to retrieve the calibration (program) code the truck is running on now and then go to this GM site; it’s free and open site.

Enter the VIN number of the vehicle and then click get CAL ID; this will bring up all of the flashes (software programs) that GM has brought out for this vehicle. The higher the CAL numbers the newer the program; is the rule of thumb.
If you find something in the reflash descriptions that addresses this or another issue you can take the vehicle or just the computer itself into someone that has the ability to perform updates. Mostly dealerships but more and more independents are buying the hardware to do this.
If by chance there are several updates don’t worry about which one to choose; when a computer is reflashed you get the latest, greatest and all prior will follow with it.
The only word of warning; for some of the corrective measures to stop false codes or lean drivability issues they enriched the fuel mixture and on occasion your fuel mileage will drop after a reflash and you cannot reverse the procedure.
