1989 Mazda MPV check engine Lite

Hello all
Is there a way for the home mechanic to reset the Check Engine Light? The manual says this light will come on about every 80,000 miles for a catalytic converter check. The converter is fine and all else works fine on this van. Light only comes on at hiway speeds and it's rather random. Could it be anything else?

I own and drive a car with 208K with original converters. Can't promise that for all cars. Most computer for cars will be reset by disconnecting the neg battery cable for a minute or two. If a warning light comes right back you need to investigate the trouble. Most cars will forget a temporary problem after so many starts or perhaps a couple hundred miles.

Warning: Don't reset a car's computer near needing an emissions test for a sticker as it will fail. At least that's the way it is in the "Peoples Republic of Massachusetts" I still love this place! T
 

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try over the weekend and let you know how it turns out. No inspection in this county in Oregon.

NO INSPECTIONS! When can I move there? I'd sooner put up with the rain than the insane rules of Massachusetts. Just kidding - I've lived here all my life and it's home.

The car inspection system here is crazy! They put my older cars on a dyno and one kid (anybody under 30) had my car going about 100mph in place and destroyed the rear differential seals and brakes. That F****ing sticker cost me at cost about $300 bucks.!! The kid said he could'n't get the feel of my gas pedal - thanks for that law. Heck - Boston is the big city and the wind almost always blows west to east which means any air pollution has about 3,000 miles of the Atlantic and never has reached Europe.

I shouldn't belly ache. This is one of the richest areas of the world! Nice housing is between one and five Mil!!!! If people will pay it what can you do?
