replacing shift knob on 95 volvo 940 turbo automatic

What is procedure for removing old shift knob and installing replacement? The sun has caused old shift knob to come apart, and it needs to be replaced. Do I need to get knob from dealer or can I find from after-market supplier? Is there some kind of trick to doing this job or can your average shade-tree mechanic perform the task? Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.
Most shift knobs can just be turned to the left to losen. Or there may be a cap on the top witch can pop off and remove the set screw.
