89 ford escort auto transmission problem

engine runs good car will not move. How can I tell if it is the transmission or a broken axel. Car was running good I came to a traffic light stopped and when I started to move I heard a loud thump and the car did not move. Probably not a broken half shaft (axle) unless you have been ignoring a wild noise for a while. Check that trans fluid is properly full and if so you will need to look see if linkage is moving and if that works you probably need the transmission rebuilt,
