2 questions 99 ford windstar

Hi,
The first problem is the ABS light sometimes stays on when I start the car. Sometimes it comes on while I'm driving. I can turn the engine off and restart the engine and the light goes off. Any ideas?

The second question is about the HVAC. When you move the temperature gauge all the way to the coldest or the hottest There is a flapping noise coming from inside the front vents. if you move the gauge slightly it will stop. Also I noticed that i no longer have heat (not that I need it right now:). Any ideas on this one also??

Thanks in advance,
Chuck You can get a code read for the ABS. Light will go off when restarted and may come on the first time you touch the brakes. Sometimes it's just dirt build up on the sensors at star wheels.

The temp issue: What do you mean when you move the gauges? If you mean change the request for temperature and hear a noise there is probably a problem with the diverter door,

Thanks Tom, Yes when I move the temperature gauge to the maximum either way heat or air conditioning, the diverter door just keeps slapping. (opening or closing??). If I move the temperature gauge just slightly off the maximum heat or cold it will stop slapping (you can actually hear it go slap, slap). but I noticed the other day that if I move the temperature gauge to heat, I have no heat.

I guess my question is how hard a fix is this?

Thanks in advance for all your help,

Chuck
No distribution boxes are easy anymore. Some better than others but all are a PITA. If you had no noise with this I would suspect the water control valve which would be quiet about its problems.

The diverter doors are just flaps that work like a choke plate and move the air flow from outside air or recirculated air, to vents, defrost, floor or a mix of those. Temp door just bleeds in/mixes the air going past it and if it's stuck to just get A/C it will be a problem when you really need heat or defrost to be warm.

These doors are usually vacuum operated and can wear at the pivots. Get this carefully diagnosed as it's too much work to get in there and be wrong. Some may suggest a whole new distribution box or depending on the type of problem could patch where it is broken just as well or better than original -- it depends.

A shop that specializes in A/C or does a lot of it will be more familiar with this than general car repair places. It's not all that common but these things do fail and the noise is the clue,
