For the past week I have not been able to start my car. I have a 1991 Ford Crown Victoria 5.8L.
I tried to jump it, but when I jump it, it makes a click (even after charging for several minutes) then all the power goes out of my car, to where not even the inside lights come on.
After that even if I leave the cables on for a couple minutes, my lights don't always come back on. Sometimes they do.
I was told to try replacing the solenoid, so we just did that today. But we're still having the same issues. Now I'm told to replace the starter, which I would have a professional do, since I really don't know too much about cars.
My question is, since my lights don't come back on, even after leaving the cables on for a couple minutes, would that all be caused by the starter? Or could their be a deeper issue? The first thing to do is to make sure the battery is not shorted internally. Make sure the cable connections are clean and tight. After that, we can go farther. You can guess all the way through and finally get the right part to fix it. If you have a battery charger that you can leave on the battery overnight to test to see if it will start the car. If it starts then, have the charging system along with the battery tested. Let us know.

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds Just wanted to do a follow up on that and give a little background, sorry I didn't do that in the first post.
I had a similar problem a couple months ago. All they (a mechanic) did was knock the starter around a little and it started up.
Both times this has happened without warning, no dimming of lights or anything of the sort. When I try to start it up it makes a click, and there is a spark at the solenoid, and then all the power goes out of my car, no matter how long I leave it charge.
Occasionaly power comes back to the car(my lights work) after leaving the jumper cables on for a couple minutes, and occasionally it doesn't.
Hope that gives some more insight to what's been going on. If you are seeing a spark, you've got a poor connection. Do as W2O suggested. Physically remove the battery cables from the battery. Clean them. Check the connections at the solenoid. Tighten them. Check the cable at the starter. Clean if needed, tighten. Then, repost.
