99 yukon gear shifter not working

This is a 99 yukon and the gear shifter on the steering wheel isn't working. Just stays in park and seems stripped out somehow. The tranny will go into gear from the linkage on the transmission itself. Seems to be a part on the column that is loose but i've never seen a working shifter on a yukon so I'm in need of some help.
If you forced it you may have broken stuff. You can't shift that vehicle out of park without your foot on the brake and if that doesn't work it's usually a brake light switch, T
