WIPERS

my 01 buick regals wiper blades come to rest at the top of the wipe instead of returning at the bottom of the windshield, they operate just fine but wont go back to what I would call the start position. Any ideas? What has likely happened is that the mechanical parking cam’s bracket tab has bent over just out of reach of a spring loaded shoe or catch (whatever you want to call it) is not catching the tab.
When the wipers are running the motor turns in one direction, when you shut the wipers off the motor change’s directions. When this happens this shoe is suppose to hit (catch) the tab changing the cam’s orientation and pulls the wipers to the bottom of the windshield.
You’ll have to get to this cam that is attached to the crank arm of the wiper motor; remove the rubber boot and see if the tab is bent; I’m not talking bent over flat; as little as a 32 of an inch or less is all it takes. If so bend it back into position so this “shoe” will contact it after you turn the wipers off and the motor is making its one rev. backwards.
I’ve also seen this shoe become partly seized and the little flat spring is not strong enough to push the shoe out all the way. A little penetrating oil and working the shoe back and forth usually fixes this, as long as the spring isn’t broken. If so you’re into a new assembly.
Once you see this wiper’s parking cam first hand; it’ll make more sense, as in what I’ve tried to explain.
Dan.

Thank you DanD for your response. My 89 Venture van was doing the same thing. The spring loaded shoe was sticking and about 30 minutes to find the tiny part, lube, and free up. It would have been quicker as it is 12 degrees out side and I dont move very fast under these conditions. Keep up the good work.
