Hi,
I bought a new catalytic converter and muffler (direct fit) and I would like to install them. They have weldings that look raw, I think they will rust shortly. Should I paint them using high temperature resistent paint?
ty I've never tried it but I have a very rusted out exhaust system. It doesn't sound like it would hurt as long as the paint stays on the outside of course. Perhaps there are underbody treatments you could try as well? With a vehicle that is 10 years old I've learned that rust here in New England is the number one problem and have vowed that if I ever get a new vehicle to start a regular fresh water wash down plan, particularly in the winter. I would imagine that next to changing oil that is the best preventative maintenance you can do.
I find systems rust mostly from the inside. I've painted whole systems with BBQ paint and didn't last a minute longer. they will fail first at cool spots and where seamed or welded.
You can buy parts that are I call it powder coated that last tons longer. They have an aluminized glow and many chain stores are now selling these parts because it really ticked off customers -me included to do the same parts in just over a year!!
Some places will guarentee even pipes as long as you own the car! CAP in New England for instance,
T
