I have a 1996 Sonoma 4x4 with a shift-lever, vacuum acuated, four wheel drive. The vacuum switch on the transfer case has a little ball that was getting stuck and preventing the 4wheel drive from disengaging. This would cause a gradually increasing noise that would eventually become extremely loud. I was stopping and backing up, engaging and disengaging the 4wheel drive many times to disengage. Finally after weeks of this happening I kept driving through the horendous noise until there was a huge clunk. The four wheel drive was never engaged again. I since have replaced the vacuum switch on the transfer case and now the 4wheel drive light goes on but the front wheels get no drive. I need to know what that faulty switch would have broken? if you pull the actuator assy from the right side of the front diff, you will probably find that the actuator that slides on the shaft is stripped and wont engage.
