I am at my wits end. I need help. I have a 98 mitsibishi eclipse sypder GS and its been at the transmission place for a MONTH! I just need to know if its the transmission shop or my car that is making it so difficult. About a a year and half ago my transmission went. My own fault there were warning signs and I just brushed them off. It was rebuilt and cost me $1400. 1 year and 3 months later, it goes again..at least thats what the transmission place told me. appearantly mitsibishi cars are know to break down if you leave it running in park for peroids of time. its supposely does not get the lubrication it needs.thats what the tranny place said. so they rebuilt my transmission again and they find the planetaries are at fault. they replace them among a few odds and ends. i pick it up and boom it breaks down again. they take it back the planetaries go again, some type of blockage with the oil or fluid didn't get to the planetaries. replace them AGAIN breaks down again..is it my car or is the tranny place?? i need some advise!!!!!!!!!!!!! The problem is in the cooler. The Eclipse used several different types of transmissions, one of them being the Chrysler A-604. The 604 was famous for Torque converter troubles. The problem is in the valve body. The torque converter clutch regulator valve. Whats happening is the wear in the regulator valve is causing the converter clutch apply and release oil pressure to fluctuate. This causes the converter clutch to chatter breaking off pieces of the clutch lining. The lining gets circulated through the transmission and cooler and restricts the cooler flow. When the cooler flow is restricted, the oil to the transmission is restricted. This causes planetary meltdown. One of the common mistakes made by some shops is that they fail to check the cooler for restrictions when rebuilding. This will cause failure of the new or rebuilt transmission. In short, they repaired the transmission but they didnt address the cause of the problem. (The cooler). You can not completely clean out the cooler. Most everyone I know in the transmission industry including myself, replaces the cooler whenever a 604 fails due to planetary meltdown.
The transmission shop can confirm my diagnosis with a cooler flow test.
Along with the cooler, the shop needs to address the regulator valve wear problem to avoid this process from starting over again.
Good luck and if I can be of any more help, just let me know.
