1981 Pontiac Turbo Trans engine finally died

It's finally happened!
My 1981 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am 301 engine finally died after 89000 (or 189000?) miles.

I am looking into swapping a different Pontiac engine into the car. Now with the 1981 mounts, what engines can I just simply swap in? GM 350? 400? 455? Will they all work with the stock transmission? I would really prefer to keep my trans because it is running great.

Can I also keep my carburator?

I also will obviously have to trash the computer system that is currently in it. What do I have to do exactly to properly do this? Just basically gut all extra sensors and wires and keep it bare with the new engine?

I'm looking for an affordable way to get this car on the road again, along with some power

Thanks
-Tom my buddy has an 86 camaro that had a 305 and he put a 350 in it with no problem...bolted to tranny and motor mounts and didnt have to change wire harness or ecu....i dont know if that info would help but just figured id throw it out there Ok, first off, nothing about an 86 is the same as the 81. Next, the 301 is a engine produced specificly by Pontiac not Chevy such as the 305 and 350 mentioned in the previous post. Having said that, those engines are not readily interchangeable with the Pontiac mounts and transmission that you currently have.

You could easily swap out the 301 for a Pontiac produced 400 (not chevy 400) or 455 since to the best of my knowledge that are basicly the same. The computer and sensors can be taken out and gotten rid of. Depending on your transmission, you should be able to keep it but I would do a filter and fluid change while your tearing things apart. You can keep the carb but I would have it adjusted to meet the needs of the larger engine.

(If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I've owned a 77 trans-am and have some experience with these cars. Ok, first off, nothing about an 86 is the same as the 81. P.S. Sorry for the double post........... like i said...didnt know if it would help just throwing it out there sorry
