1999 Lexus ES300 w/ U140E transmission, 250,000 highway miles
I'm still on my original engine/tranny but recently the tranny wouldn't go into reverse; now it does, however....Rebuilt, installed trannys will cost me $2000 minimum. Before going this route is there anything I can do to get a little more time out of my present tranny, i.e. a flush, new filter/fluid, etc. or am I just wasting my time? I think you would be wasting your time and money flushing or doing anything else.....I think a rebuild is your only option here .....or installing a used transmission from a junk yard. Some junk yards offer an extended warranty for an additional fee. I replaced my tranny with a rebuild from KarKing and had to change the rear casing to my original, in order to get the mounting to work. It drives, but I'm getting some strange behavior: at highway speeds when I romp on the accelerator, the downshift takes me to a gear that redlines the tach, and, it seems the tranny is slow to shift during normal acceleration--especially when cold. Is this an electronic problem/adjustment? Hopefully this is an adjustment issue.....as long as the transmission is not SLIPPING...then it is an internal transmission problem
I hope you got a direct replacement transmission though, I am a little concerned with why you had to replace the case to get the mount to line up. Could this transmission NOT be for this exact year model?
If its not an exact match, you will have big problems since this is an electronic controlled transmission and who knows what transmission control module this transmission is supposed to be compatible with.
I would definitely go back to the rebuilder and demand they correct this at their expense. I took my 1999 Lexus ES300 to the dealership today and explained what was happening with the redline issue. He drove it and got it to do Car Repair Talk's forum.
