The outside of my 2 front tires are wearing super fast. I had a tie rod end bust a couple months back. Towed it home and switched it out, then bought the other side to be safe a couple weeks later and installed that one. Ever since, the tires feel really bumpy (airborne feeling for a second sometimes, if that makes sense) like when I hit a hole or bump of some kind, and now I see why with the tire wear. It's as if I'm driving on the very outside of the tires only with that wear I'm witnessing. The guy at advance, and a buddy of mine said to count the turns taking them tie rod ends off and thread the new ones on with the same amount of turns, which I did, but something's not right. Thanks for any input on this.
The way to cure it is to purchase 2 new tires and have the vehicle aligned. Counting threads is a way to get it close enough to drive it to an alignment shop. Counting threads is a guess as the threads may not be started or finished in the same place.
I replaced the tie rods in my Charger and counted the threads, it was still way off. Do what Way2old said and get it aligned professionally.
transman tie rods dont usualy break by themselves. if it broke cause u ran into something or drove over a big pothole or something, its possible that a front end component is bent.
the wear u describe sounds like a camber problem, and that aint got nothing to do with the tie rods. so u may have something else going on under there.
way2old and transman are right, u should take it in and get the alignment checked. but it would be a good idea to ask them to check for bent or damaged components in the steering and suspension system while they got it on the rack. if there is such a problem, youll never get it back into spec until its fixed, and your van will just keep on eating tires. not to mention handling problems like u got. Well I found 4 used tires in good shape and had them installed with an alignment. It seems to be doing much better, and they didn't say anything about the other parts being bent or bad. A shady shop however...that's why I hate going anywhere instead of doing things myself, but I don't have lasers for alignment or anything so I had to. Also when I got home, I looked down and seen a missing lug...looked closer and the bolt that the lug screws onto is busted. Nice of them to not mention it when I picked up the van. I called the guy back and explained, and he says Car Repair Talk's forum.
