I have a 93 1.9l escort with auto trans. Igot in some snow and was spinning the tires; and was able to free myself. I did not rock the car back and forth. There was no alarming noises coming from the transmission. No clunks bangs or grinding. I preceded to move down the road ;but the trans would not shift out 1st. It actually felt like it was slipping. Shifted to neutral, it went forward, reverse it went forward. It will go into park. What have I done.
It's hard to tell without looking at the car. But even escort transmissions can take a little abuse. (Even if it included rocking the car back and forth)
I wouldn't think you did too much damage by freeing yourself from the snow.
You should check your transmission fluid level and watch for leaks.
I don't know if the function of the kickdown lever has been replaced by something electronic for the '91, but my '88 escort has a kickdown lever that tells the transmission how far you have the gas pedal pushed. It is possible that this lever has fallen out of adjustment.
But that would have nothing to do with freeing yourself from the snow.
Good luck! Thanks much for the reply. Fluid level looks good; and no burnt smell. I was hoping it had something to do as you suggested per the lever. Maybe some sensor was affected by the snow. As I turned around to back home it worked alright, but after stopping and going again it did the same thing. Thanks again. VPCar Repair Talk's forum.
