Hi, I had my transmission rebuilt and a week later it started stalling out on a cold shift. Even if i managed to get the car started, when I had to stop, say at a stop sign or light, if the car wasn't warm enough, it would shudder to the point of shutdown on the down shift. I got stuck at an intersection for 10 minutes this way. I immediately took it back to the rebuilder and they said since the problem went away once the car warmed up that it was not a trans problem. they found I had cracks in two of my vaccum hoses. They replaced those and that fixed the problem for a week. Since they said it wasn't a trans problem, I took it to a nissan dealer who didn't think that it was a trans problem either. They replaced my ignition wires, distributor cap, and did a 60k mile maintenance (which I was gonna get done anyway) and the problem went away for another week. Before I got to take it back to the dealer, the shift lock started to lock all by itself as soon as you shifted into park. I have owned the car for 3 years and have never used the shift lock. I took the car back and now the dealer is saying that it must be a trans problem because they couldn't find anything else wrong with it. Since I got it back from the dealer (I haven't had the chance to get it back to the rebuider), the car now gets stuck in remote start. I start it remotely, when I get in the car without inserting the key and hit the brake the car does not turn off as it is supposed to. If I put the key in, turn it to on, put my foot on the brake and shift gears (even after being warm enough), the car shuts down. The second I put the car in park and release the brake the car restarts all by itself. I have to use the remote to turn the car off and restart with the key to go anywhere. The old trans, even while broken, did not have this problem. All of these problems are new to me as far as my ownership of the car goes. Not to mention that this is the second time the transmission has been rebuilt. Is this truely a trans problem or did the dealership miss something?
Tamikia it is probly not a trans problem --- Thats not to say that the trans work didnt cause the problem.----Most likley you have a bad (MLPS) manual lever position sensor ---problem.It is also the sensor that keeps you from being able to start the car in gear it is mounted to the trans and is often not rmoved from the trans during a rebuild.however when a builder washes the case in a hot parts washer it tends to build up moisture in this sensor causing it to short out or just give the wrong reading -----As for why your car works for a week is because anytime any of these people work on it they will also (clear the computer codes) as part of a service or as part of the procedure any time we work on a car. Therefore the problem gets passed off as an intermitent problem Hint next time you take it in tell them only part of the symptoms and keep it simple---do not tell them it only does it when cold or when hot --since they will by now be looking for any reason to dismiss it as a simple glitch-then hope it wont come back.Car Repair Talk's forum.
