Ok, so my car has about 180k miles on it. I've kept up with random maintenance and it has been through numerous part changes and a couple major repairs; some transmission related but never to do with the actual transmission but the components around it.
So, I'm noticing an odd thing going on. Today when I shifted from P to R, it jolted rather rigorously. I drove it afterward and shifting to D from R was smooth as it passed through N. Driving down the highway was smooth no problems. When I got to work, I shifted back and forth between P, R N and D very slowly just to hear the transmissions. Everything was ok, no problem. I figured maybe I did not hit the pedal correctly or it was idling too high when I shifted.
So, when I get out of work, transmit to R and again I get the jolt, so I make sure I press the break good and check the idle and when it was low I transmitted to D and it jolted again! Which means, something is getting worse or more obvious. Again, drove smooth down the highway and when I parked it would not recreate the problem.
I think it has something to do with how cold the engine is. Now, the transmission itself is working fine when I'm driving, and this problem isn't always happening. I think it is the transmission mounts. Any ideas? sounds like a motor mount, and it is really common on this car. Hold the brake and shift from r to d and d to r while pressing accelerator pedal to about 2000 rpm. have someone watch the engine while you do this. if a motor mount is broken the engine will move considerably. it is usually the front lower mount.Car Repair Talk's forum.
