Toyota 4Runner transmission problems

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have two issues that may or may not be related. I own a 2000 SR5 4WD V6 automatic Toyota 4runner. It has about 120k miles on it. The first issue is that it is idling high. When I start it cold it idles at about 1500 rpms and is pretty loud. When I let off the brake it accelerates fairly quickly.

The second issue started a little while back- while driving at above 65-70 mph, it would automatically shift down, causing the RPMs to go high, as if I was flooring it. It is now starting to shift hard and won't shift into its final gear when traveling above 60mph. I checked the transmission fluid levels and it seems to be okay.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks
chston; Engine management can directly affect transmission actions. The fast idle speed needs to be addressed, first. You could have a sensor malfunction, a vacuum leak, IAC problem, ect. Being a 2000 model, I would think that you should be seeing a check engine (or service soon) lamp illuminated. But, don't depend on that. Most parts stores will plug in and pull any trouble codes that may have been stored. We should start there.
Of course, you can visually check for a vacuum hose that may have come off.

SW Washington Thank you very much for the response! First of all- the check engine light has not come on yet. I had a guy look at it today and he ran a diagnostic check on it and it didn't produce any problems (codes) for the transmission, engine or electrical. I will check the things you mentioned.

He also mentioned that it could possibly be the hydrolics (sp?) in the transmission.
