97 auto firbird stuck in park

took apart console, cleaned out 10 years worth of garbage, worked fine for two days...today couldnt get into park, then it stuck in drive (would only move between neutral and drive). took apart again, and works sporadically...think it may be solenoid, but afraid to pull off electrical conection, and dont really know how to check it anyway..my brothers are useless, so i bought a haynes manual, but it isnt specific enough for a novice....any help appreciated, cant afford a garage right now. oops, 132000 miles, 6 cyl., and i am sure it is in the actual shift mechanism...


update: think its the shift lever solenoid???
