I have a 97 Taurus that has 135,000 miles on it. The engine was replaced and now the car won't go over 35mph. I know the engine is good and am hoping the trans did not go. I have replaced the trans fluid and gasket and still the same problem. The car will go into reverse. Is there anything else I can test before either junking the car or putting in a trans? I hate to put more cash into it, but I am in pretty far already.
Did this engine ever work properly? Was trans fine before the engine swap?
Does it drive ok but just lack power badly or never shift out of low?
The engine was tested and at the time I heard it, it was running fine. Before putting in the new engine it was sluggish, but ran at all speeds. Since the engine has been put in it hasn't gone over 30-35, it seems like 2nd gear isn't kicking in and the tack revs to the danger zone. I checked for a vacumn leak and that made it have a little more pep but still not going over 35. Am I missing anything else that is not the trans?

Since it was running okay before, I'll discount the possibility of a plugged catalytic converter. The transmission shifting points are controlled by the computer. Check for the possibility of a pinched or disconnected wire. Common problems are wires pinched between the bell housing and the engine. Or, someone forgot to connect something.
