1998 Dodge Dakota Transmission Problems

I have a 1998 dodge dakota and its been running fine until today. Its about 85 dagrees out right now so the heat might be the problem, but Id like to make sure. I made a stop on a hill light, 1st-2nd-3rd- into 4th it started shaking and there was a burning plastic smell. Like bur---bur----bur---bur the "---" where it was shaking. So I pulled it over and turned it off, and back on. It did the same thing only it was doing it in 2nd gear. I had it towed home. Am I looking at a pulley problem or something completely different?
Wild and iffy guess - try unplugging A/C right at compressor and tie wires safely away. If that makes any change hit back,

Havent noticed a difference
As said it was a wild guess the A/C was loading too much on the engine. If you tried that then that wasn't it. Now you should get a code reading which may help. If you want to try - try taking the belt right off, engine cold and don't drive far as you have no PS, water pump when it's off. If problem with struggling engine quits it would be likely a belt driven item causing this. Still guessing - I'm not there of course. Don't let it overheat so if you try some tricks do it cold and not for long,

Brought it to a buddys house, hes taking a look at it, said its probably water pump, he also said my Radiator fans unplugged so he's going to fix that too. Thanks for the advice.
