syn oil or dino oil 93 GMC 305

I've been doing a lot of research on oils for my new truck. It's a 93 GMC 305 4x4 with only 8000 km on it. It seems that synthetic oils are best for vehicles that do a lot of driving. But my driving consists of short trips: I work one mile from home, grocery shop four miles from home, my mother lives eight miles from home (you get the picture). I'll have to change my oil a lot. Is it even worth while to use synthetic oils? The truck has only a three inch oil filter which means it should be changed quite often (Canadian Tire has a pretty good one, 97% at 10-20 microns).

My head is spinning from all the contradictory information I'm reading. Can you tell me what oil I should be using and how often to change oil and air/oil filter. My address is

Terry Hi Terry,

You will find many differing opinions on the use of synthetic oil as you’ve already discovered. My opinion is that with the circumstances you are describing with very short trips and most likely low speed driving the oil should be changed about every 2000-2500 miles (3200-4000 km) because the engine never has a chance to run for any length of time at operating temperature. This can lead to excessive moisture and contaminants from combustion which can seriously degrade any oil. Synthetic oil by design is a bit more tolerant to contaminants then conventional oil. But I think increasing the frequency of the oil changes with a quality conventional oil would be more beneficial and cost efficient than using a synthetic oil at normal oil change intervals and using a synthetic oil at increased intervals would be a waste of money.

Hope this helps
