I have an 87 Olds Calais Supreme. It starts fine when it's cold or semi-warm, but after I've been driving it for a distance (75 miles or more), if I shut if off, it usually takes me 3 or 4 times of cranking it and pumping it for 15 secs at a time to get it to start. It's cranking up, just not catching. I have no clues on it. Help, anyone? Just read the sticky... It's a 4tech engine, auto trans, Odometer's broken, I'd guess around 150k on the engine. Hii, Guy!
You didn't say if you have a carburetor or fuel injection. I take it you
have a carburetor because you said you have to pump the accelerator.
With injected models pumping the accelerator does no more that opening
and closing the door until the injector sprays fuel into the system.
Well, I just checked the manual and they don't list a carburetor, so let's
go with the injection. The fuel pump should be in the tank and is electric.
The pump may be getting weak, and leaking down, (?) and taking a few
minutes to build up the pressure...I know, this sounds off-the-wall, but
anything is possible.
Another thing to look at, and I have more faith it it, is the air breather.
If it is stopped up it will cause a hard start.
In th Lord, Tommy yes, it's fuel injected. It won't start when it's like that unless I gas it. I already know the O2 sensor is bad, or at least I think I do; the check engine light has been on forever. Would bad plug wires or a bad O2 sensor do it?
