My daughters cavalier recently wouldnt start. When i checked the fuel pump was not working. I replaced the fuel pump and filter, the pump still doesnt work. Checking the electrical connection, I do not have power to the pump. Can anyone help? Many, if not all, GM products have a switch whose purpose is to cut power to the fuel pump in the event of an accident/impact. The switch is your basic automotive circuit breaker, and sometimes for reasons unknown will trip even when no accident or impact has occurred. I've even heard of people who have driven over a speed bump too fast or slammed through a couple of large potholes, and as a result this switch tripped out. I don't know where it's located on that particular car, but your manual or a dealer can quickly tell you. couldnt find anything like a breaker that may have shut the fuel off. I have installed a new fuel pump, relay and filter...I do have power to the pump via the purple and balck/white striped wires. BUT pump wont operate....Checking the old pump with power on the black and gray wires the pump operates, but not with power on the purple and black/white wires.....Im in dire need of help here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gray wire is power for the fuel pump.black ground.check fuel pump relay and if the old pump was shorted it may have blown a fuse.usually ecm-b fuse but check them all. I have checked the fuses in the underdash fuse panel as well as the fues in the blosk where the relay is located...all are good. Could there be another fuse somewhere I dont know about?????? how about a fuel pump/inj fuse.are you checking power at the fuse or just looking to see if its blown.supply voltage to the gray wire at the relay and see if the fuel pump runs.if not you may have a open terminal.the only schematic I have is for a 98 cav.besides the obvious I think there is a connector behide the left side kick panel Yes there is a connector behind the driver side kick panel....directly behind the fuse panel....
After finally obtainig a wireing diagram, I found that the hot wire had burn into where it entered the connector. I have no idea how this could have happened but it did. I also discovered after installing the new fuel pump before the car would actually start I had to prime the engine, let it run for a few seconds to build oilpressure before the fuel pump would operate. I found this information in a chiltons repair manual.
Thaks for your help guys! the wire that was burnt was caused by high resistance somewhere in the circuit.GM has a problem with the female terminals in these connectirs opening causing this problem.I would check the terminals inthat connector.if you have any more problems ,post them! Start by checking your ground for the fuel pump circuit. corrosion could be the culprit
