I have a 1993 Chevy K1500 4WD, 6 cylinder, 262 CI, 4.3L TBI, 5 speed manual transmission, 244,000 miles. The engine and tranny were rebuilt at 148,000 miles.
The truck runs great for a hour or so then will start to sputter and lose power when trying to accelerate. At the same time, it also makes a loud thumping under the hood like it's backfiring through the throttle body.
I checked the ECM for codes but there were none stored.
All of the normal tune up maintenance (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, filters, etc) has been done in the past 3-4 months.
Any thoughts? Hi Jimmy,
Taking into consideration the mileage of your vehicle and the symptoms you describe, I would test the ignition system. I would connect an oscilloscope to the primary or secondary ignition and try a stress test by disabling the fuel injectors and cranking the engine with the throttle wide open. You may even get lucky and find something w/o the symptoms present. However, if you are not adept at viewing ignition patterns/waveforms or don't have access to an o-scope you'll likely be resigned to paying a lot of money to change parts unnecessarily. The data from a scan tool can also tell you volumes about the problem when interpreted correctly.
A good mechanic in your area would be able to solve your problem in a reasonable amount of time.
