rev problem with my 04 grand prix gt

if i give her gas when in park or neutral the rpms only go to 3500. it makes a strange (backfire like) noise when it gets to 4000. all my other cars will rev high. does anyone that knows this car know if it has a rev limiter or if i have a problem on my hands? thank u soooo much. Yes, from your description is sounds like the rev limiter. The PCM cuts off fuel injectors to keep the engine from over revving in park and neutral. thank u so much.
