heater fan not working

I have a 98 Plymouth minivan and the fan on the climate control is not working in the morings. In the afternoons it is good. What do you guys think it could be? I am thinking it is the climate control bezel and have checked into replacing it(has the rear a/c,dual temp zones, rear wiper and defrost). I was told i would need the same # that is on the back. Also was told that may have to have the van reprogrammed. Is this true? Thanks When the fan isn't working, look underneath the passenger side dash. The blower fan and motor sit in there. Take your hand and bang on it a couple of times with the blower on high. If it comes on, replace the blower motor. If the heater core is bad the fans would still work/ I had to go out a few mins ago for about 20 mins and had no heat at all and the pass floor was damp. The back a/c would blow out cold air also? It's hard and expensive for a new heater core right? THANKS Quote:If the heater core is bad the fans would still work/

I assuming your asking that if the heater core is leaking or plugged, will the blower fan still work? Yes, it will.

If the blower fan isn't working you won't have heat coming out because there won't be any air passing through the heater core. If you have the compressor running and the blower fan isn't working, the evaporator is going to freeze into a solid block of ice. When the ice melts the case will fill up with water if there is a restriction in the drain. There should also be an elbow on the drain outside on the firewall. If the elbow is missing, the air in the engine bay while driving will push the water back up into the tube causing the case to fill up with water and leak all over the floor. Pull the carpet back where it is damp and put a little bit of whatever is leaking on your tongue. If it tastes sweet, then your core is leaking.

You can actually damage the ac compressor by running the ac (compressor) without the blower fan working. The core freezes and oil doesn't get to the compressor. Yesterday went to the mother in laws house about 45 mins away. When left the heat was not working but the fan was. The rear heat/fan was working and about 15-20 mins later the front heat/fan started working. Almost home turned fan off and some mins later turned it on, fan did not come on but had heat flowing from the vents like on low. I dont know what to do. Should i get another bezel/climate control combo? Could it be the fan? Thanks Have you tried hitting the bottom of the blower motor when you don't have air flow coming out and fan selection on high? If you smack it and the blower motor comes alive, you need to replace the blower motor. If it doesn't come on, you'll have to get the volt meter out and start checking circuits. You shouldn't replace anything unless you have verified it is faulty by process of elimination. Yes i have hit the blower but it has a cover on it and it did not come on. I am going to take that off and try it tomorrow. Thanks If you have a meter or test light, unplug the connector from the blower motor. Connect a volt meter or 12 volt test light to the terminals in the blower connector. With the ignition on and blower switch on high the test lamp should be bright. If using a meter you should see around 12 volts DC.

If you don't see any voltage, take your meter or lamp and connect one lead to the dark blue wire terminal in the connector and the other lead to something metal under the dash (body ground). The lamp should come on bright or the meter should show 12 volts DC. Let us know what you find out. When i do this (or try) should the fan not be working but on? It works in the afternoons. I have a test light and i am not sure if it is what you are talking about. Looks like a screw driver with a light and a wire that hooks to some metal. Is that it? I have a meter but it is a Harbor Freight but i dont know how to use it. The directions is not clear to me. Thanks This morning started the van and the fan did not work. I then hit the fan with a rubber hammer and nothing. I got a heater to plug in the output place and have a blown fuse. When i popped the hood to change the fuse (beside battery) the fan started working. I have heard that the resistor is a problem on these vans. I was able to get it out and it looks fine, still silver color not coroded. I still have not got another blower or control switch/panel. That is on my list next when i go to a pullapart and find those parts. Any other ideas? thanks Yes, you need to find someone that knows how to use a volt meter or 12 volt test lamp to check for power and ground in the front blower motor circuits. If you don't test those circuits and give us some readings, your guess is good as ours as to what is wrong.

Easy way to determine if the control panel is a possible cause or you have power problem going to the blower motor is to jumper the black tan wire on the blower motor connector to ground with it plugged into the blower motor and the ignition turned to the run position. If the blower motor comes on, you either have a problem with the wiring to the control panel, a faulty control panel, or a bad ground from the control panel. If the rear blower works when the front blower doesn't, more than likely it isn't a ground fault.

If the blower doesn't come on when you jump black tan wire to ground, you have a power problem from the blower relay side. From there you need to unplug the blower motor electrical connector and check for power (battery voltage) on the dark blue wire. Power for the blower motor comes from the blower motor relay when you turn the ignition to the run position. If you don't see power, you need to pull the blower motor relay and check for power in the relay cavity on terminal 30 and 86. The relay is located in the power distribution center (fuse/relay block) under the hood.
