Need to replace Cat Conv. where do I get it?

I have a 1995 Chevy g20 van 5.7l with 130000 miles on it. It failed California emissions and so I paid to have it diagnosed. They traced everything to the catalytic converter and then quoted me about 500 bucks to replace it.

I've never replaced one before but I know it's just part of the exhaust system right? How hard can it be? My main problem is finding one. I've searched online but all the ones I find aren't for sale or even legal in California. Is there some secret insider website to get these kind of parts from? Can anyone lend some insight on where to get one?

Also, any specialty tools needed for this job or just standard stuff? Honestly, I am not really up on the new laws that California has for the sale and installation of cats, but you should read the new laws that have come out on the ARB.CA.gov site.

There are several companies that do sell cats that have been approved CARB and they made a list of exempt universal cats that can be installed on your vehicle. You may have to contact one or more of the companies and find out where there dealers are at, so you can get one.
