hi recently purchased a 96 chevy w/ 5.7 liter 2wd. and it started out with the starter then the fuel pump then the ignitition module
then the brake booster. now what happens is i turn the truck on pump comes on but wont start sounds like it wants to but i cant tell cause when cranked it the starter kept starting even with no key had to disconnect the battery. before this though had trouble hard starting in the morning but ran perfect all day after that. also i kind of flooded the engine while trying to start and i know this cause i smelled the gas, checking to c if engine was recieving fuel. was wondering if i should replace fuel filter. i am going out there now to bang on starter to c if i can unstick it. i havent done any maintenance to it yet. when the truck was running, was the check engine lite on?
a good possibility for the cranking problem is a bad ignition switch. check the switch and look for signs of burning, melting, etc. either on the switch or the connector and wires attached to it. if it looks ok, pull the connector off the switch and use a short piece of wire to jump between the yellow wire and one of the red 'hot' wires. if the starter cranks when these are jumped, and stops when u break the connection, replace the switch. u can also use a dvom or ohm meter to check for continuity on the switch between the terminals for the yellow wire and one of the hot wire terminals. it should show a open circuit in all key positions except 'start.' if theres continuity in all key positions, the switch is bad.
for the hard start, if its been more then 30k miles since the fuel filter was replaced, do it. thats something that should be done as part of routine maintenance anyways. if that dont help, u would need to check fuel pressure and leakdown with a test gauge, and allso check for spark, when it dont start. this will narrow it down to either a fuel or ignition system problem. even tho it sounds like its getting fuel, pressure thats too low will cause problems.
if the engine is flooded, holding the gas pedal while u crank it puts it in 'clear flood' mode and will blow the excess fuel out of the cylinders.Car Repair Talk's forum.
