93 Jeep Cherokee 4WD Front Universal Joints

What is the best way to check the front axle universal joints to check if they are worn out? What is involved in their replacement if they are worn out? If you jack one front tire up and try to turn it back and forth with the transfer case in 4WD you can see if there's any play in the u-joints. All of them actually.

Never thought of that. You could check all u-joints by jacking up one tire and trying to turn it back and forth while in neutral and transfer case locked. It would probably be easier to produce play, if there were going to be any, by jacking up the tire nearest the u-joints you want to be checking. Pull the driveshaft and turn the yoke around in 360 and feel for any stiff spots. When my u-joints went bad, one went dry of grease and seized up. Everything ran fine except for a small tink noise when I went from reverse to forward or sometimes when I started to accelerate after coasting. Anyways, it was so bad I couldn't bend the yoke down all of the way. Pulling a driveshaft only takes a few minutes to do and is probably the best way to check.Car Repair Talk's forum.
