Hi I am having issues with what seems to be the steering wheel shaking when driving. This isn't the entire time I drive it and will happen intermittenly and at various speeds. This is what I have had recently done that I thought might make it stop. I had both front rotors replaced. My passenger side front tire rod was bent and had both the inner and outer tire rods replaced. I had my torque strut engine mount replaced. Have had my car aligned and it has gotten 4 new tires and had them balanced. I am at a loss and the times I have had people drive it to see what they can it of course doesn't shake for them. I appreciate any help or input into this. Thanks in advance. this is a hard thing to diagnose when u cant see the car or tet drive it. it could be anything from a loose or worn suspension component to the steering system or brakes. the best way to nail it down would be to get the front end checked out at a shop, they should be able to find out whats causing it. Ok thank you for your help. I have an appointment tomorrow to get the front end checked. I was wondering if it at all could be a transmission problem........would a transmission issue possibly make the shaking happen? i dont think a tranny problem would cause this kind of shaking. but its possible a bad motor mount or tranny mount could. Well took it in and they can't find anything wrong with it......they mentioned to when car starts shaking to turn the over drive button to off to see if it still shakes or stops......also said try putting it in neutral when it starts shaking but it makes me a little nervous........don't want to mess anything possibly more up. They said it might also be something in the drive train. I don't know getting a little discouraged to finding a cure. slipping it into neutral and back into drive while the car is moving wont hurt nothing, just make sure u take your foot off the gas pedal when u do it. if the shaking goes away when u do that it could point to a drivetrain problem. Hi thank you I will try that then.......I was just looking on the computer and found some people with simalar issues. Some of the suggestions were it could be bent rims. If it was bent rims I would think the shaking would happen all the time.....not just some of the time. Hi also curious ....could this possibly indicate a transmission problem? is there a mecahnic place that can check for Everything? I am confused to what they actually check when you bring it in someplace. a good independant general repair shop with ase certified techs should be able to figure this out. I tried putting it into neutral when it was shaking and it still shakes in neutral. I also tried turning the overdrive on or off I don't know it confuses me but either way it still shook. Thanks for the info I will try and find a place to take it to. Ok I just talked to someone about my problem and they mentioned it could possibly be the velocity joints. What is a velocity joint? Thanks in advance....I appreciate the help. stonerhythms wrote:What is a velocity joint?
its actualy called a 'constant velocity joint' or cv joint for short. theres one at both ends of each drive axle on a fwd vehicle, and there job is to allow the axle to move around as the front wheels turn and go up and down during normal driving. its kinda like how your shoulder joint lets u move your arm around in all diffrent directions while the shoulder itself stays in one place.
the most common sign of a bad outer cv joint is a clicking or clunking sound on turns. a bad inner joint or bent drive axle will cause more of a vibration then shaking.
but the fact is, theres lots of things that can cause the problem u got. and we can sit here all day and talk about what it 'could' be without actualy knowing for sure, cause we cant drive the car or inspect it over the internet
so the only way to solve this is to do what i said before, and get it checked out at a competant shop.
