My washer reservoir tank is leaking and I believe it is cracked and needs to be replaced. (Checked the hoses and they seem fine.)
The tank is in a very hard to reach spot. All the way on the bottom on the drivers side next to the wheel. I believe I will need to remove the wheel to be able to get to it. My concern is I also think I will need to remove the fender liner. I hear they are very tricky to take off without breaking the clips that hold them on. Could anyone give me some tips about taking off the fender liner and or replacing the washer reservoir?
Thanks a lot!
~Matt Can't remember exactly off the top of my head what is holding the inner fender liner in on your vehicle. They are not tricky to remove, but you do have to remove the wheel to get the liner out. The ABS harness may be clipped to the lower engine cover, so don't yank too hard. The liner may be held in by 7mm screws or push fasteners. It's pretty self explanatory once you get the liner out. Disconnect the washer line and unplug the washer motor electrical connector. Remove the mounting bolts and pull the washer tank out. Once you get the tank out plug the nipple on the washer motor and fill the tank with water. Look for where the leak is coming from. Sometimes the tank isn't the culprit. I have seen leaks from pump motor housings and broken washer lines at the motor. So I recently attempted to replace my windshield washer reservoir. The reservoir is located on the drivers side behind the fender on the bottom. I attempted to get to it by jacking up the car, removing the wheel and the fender liner, that leads me to my first problem. All the bolts on the fender liner come right out except for one. It is so corroded and warped that when I turn it with the ratchet it doesn't get loose and come out. Here is an image of the backside of the bolt. (It is attached to the fender liner and the washer tank.)
It looks like originally there were two washers on this. One on the outside and one on the inside. The inside washer is so warped and corroded it moves with the bolt when I turn and wont allow it to loosen. What are my options to removing this? Is there a tool I can get that can cut it off?
So after peeling back the fender liner, (I wasn't able to fully take it off because of the bolt I just mentioned.) I noticed that I now need to take off the entire fender because there is an obstruction keeping me from getting to two bolts in the front of the tank. (I have the replacement tank for reference.) I'm not sure what this is that is in my way, could anyone identify what this is?
Thanks a lot!! The black tube looking thing is the air intake/resonator assembly for the air cleaner box.
The corroded bolt is actually screwed into what is called or was a speed nut. You'll have to grasp the what is left of the speed nut with pliers or duckbills to hold it so you can unscrew the bolt. The nut originally looked like this:
Wow that thing really got warped!
Do you think I would need to try and take out the air intake assembly? Or should I take off the bumper cover? Yes, you'll need to remove the resonator assembly to get the tank out. Looks like you are going to have to use some penetrating oil.
