I have a 2000 ford explorer,4.0 engine. Today it decided to cause me a problem and not run right. It starts just fine but will not maintain a idle,it will slowly idle down and finally stall. This is first time for this. Have had other problems with starting, when it turns over sometimes it will not fire unless you step down on pedal then release and then down about half way. There are no codes showing and no lights showing on dash. Are these two problems related and if so or not what might be the problem/s ? Thanks for any help. Have you replaced the Battery Lately??? Check/clean the idle speed control motor. You can tap it with a screwdriver handle to see if it starts up normally. If it does, clean/replace little motor. Sounds to me like it could also be a fairly good clogged catalitic connverter. If it dies pretty quickly i would look into this. Let us know.
How long does it take to die. Does it always do this or just sometime. You could also disconnect the ISC motor and see if it will stay running. I have not replaced battery lately nor has it been unhooked for any reason. This is the first time that it would not idle, has never been a problem before. I will look into the ism and see what happens. Although yesterday afternoon it worked almost normal again. Will know more today. I thank you all for your help and really appreciate the info. Dan If it starts cutting off disconnect the ISC motor and tell me if it fixes your problem.
