where is egr located and what does it look like?

the actual egr is either on the exhaust manifold or on the intake. i'm not for sure which one on your volve. depending on the year, anything older than say an 85 will almost look like a mushroom with a vacuum hose connected to the top of it. newer that, will look like a small soup can with a three or four wire connector at the top of it.
