Gordon Brooks:
Yesterday I bottomed out. I am driving with my shocks/springs touching the tire and can smell the burning rubber. How much would it cost to fix this problem? Will I need to fix both rear shocks?
Thank you in advance,
Law
Answer
Dear Law,
The cheapest way to fix your car would be to do the work yourself. It sounds like to me, that your springs may be weak and that you do need shocks in the rear. By definition, the only job of the shocks is to keep the car from bouncing excessively. Your ride height is controlled by the springs. You should be able to acquire all of the parts for about $350. If you were to take it to a shop, it'll cost you approximately twice as much. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate this job at a 6 for difficulty. If you are halfway good with a wrench, you should be able to do this, no problem. Be sure to do both sides so you won't have to go back and do it again. Each side has about the same amount of wear and tear. Best of luck!
Gordon
