I have a 94 jeep cherokee. The tranny is slipping and the engine is knocking and leaks oil. my question is what V8 engine and 4x4 transmissions are compatible with this model and what are your recommendations? Thank you
Answer
Jeep never used a V8 in any Cherokee. If you are dead set on a V8 then Chevy is the best choice. There are several outfits making kits and parts which allow you to swap the Jeep six for a small-block Chevy. Some kits use the Jeep trans and transfer case and some use the parts from a Chevy. If you are good at this sort of stuff it is actually a fairly easy project. On the other hand, I would advise keeping the Jeep six. It is sturdier and more reliable than the Chevy engine, and wouldn't require any electronic or emissions fiddles. Many states do not allow engine swapping in late-model vehicles.
