Which battery do I need for a 1988 Chevy motorhome with a 454 big-block engine?
Also, do I need a specific type of Automatic Transmission fluid?
Thanks!
Answer
In the old days we would have called it DexronII trans fluid. Nowadays it is sold as a "universal" trans fluid, and any of the brands available will more than exceed the specs used in 1988. The battery is going to depend on the motorhome. If it is a standard Chevy chassis, either a G30 or a P30 (which most of them will be), then a group 78 series battery with at least 690 CCA will do the job. If it is a custom built chassis, then you will probably have to use the same group size that's in there. You can use a higher amp battery, but keep in mind that the high-amp batteries have thinner plates and are more fragile. I generally recommend against their use in trucks. I'm also assuming that there is one or more extra battery on board to run all the extra 12V stuff. If there isn't, you should look into installing one and using an isolator to keep from running down the starting battery (after all, that's all Chevy ever expected it to do when they designed the truck).
