4.3L vortec, crank sensor, tone wheel

hey hows it goin?? so i have a 1997 4.3L vortec out of a jimmy spun number 6 bearing... i bought another engine with out really looking at it an come to find out it doesnt have a crank sensor in the timing cover... but im told that i can haul the crank out an press my tone wheel onto it... true??

    I don't know about the tone ring, but all the books specify that you cannot use the crank that comes with a plastic timing cover in an engine that came with metal cover.  I don't know what the differences are, but I would want to get a compatible unit rather than futz around with something that probably won't work.
