i have a 96 saturn sl1 and i need a gas tank...i cant find one anywhere...can you help
Answer
Well, normally you get replacement fuel tanks from a radiator supplier. I'm not sure why, but it's always been this way. But, none of the radiator guys I know carry a tank for this car. So, I have to offer three alternatives. The first is fixing the old one. I don't know what's wrong with your old one, but it can almost certainly be fixed. Whether it would be worth the investment would depend on its condition. A salvage yard is the next best bet, but you may have to make several calls to find one. Even when you do find one, it might be in iffy condition with rust or dents. There is a commercial treatment, available, once more, at most radiator shops, that can be used to seal a rusty or leaking tank. The only other option is the dealer. Given the recent failure of Penske and GM to come to agreement, that would mean finding a dealer that was open and had one on the shelf. My guess is that the dealers who are trying to tough it out are already hooked up with each other. There are bound to be gas tanks sitting in a depot somewhere, but I really don't know what kind of status they are in. Maybe a dealer can order one, or you might have to wait until GM sells all of their old stock to an optimistic parts warehouse. If you decide to do any welding on the tank, make sure you flood the interior with water, and then with inert gas while you're welding. And then it will still be dangerous, I have seen them blow up when given the whole treatment before hand.
