I own a 1990 toyota 4runner 4x4 with 155000 miles and recently my O/D off light has began flashing. I did the diagnostics check and it gave me the number 42 which means the number one speed sensor is malfunctioning or severed wire.The question i have is that where exaclty is the sensor located and also my speedomoter went out and that was when the light started flashing. could these two be linked together.

The speed sensor is located on the Driver Side, Mid Level, Mid way back on the transmission. And a Flashing O/D light indicates a malfuntion with the transmission, which the speed sensor is causing. hope my answers are useful too you and if the problem should persist please dont hesitate to say so.
