2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 6 cyl., 148,000 miles approx.. Have had vehicle since July 2003 and have always had a starting problem. Engine always turned over but had to turn over 2-3 times before actually starting. New thing started couple days ago where it would only click instead of turn over, but did start. Next time tried to start it only clicked and no engine turnover at all. The battery was removed and tested out as Good Battery at Auto Zone. The terminals and cables are clean. The starter was replaced since it had the long history of problems. The engine will not turn over, I still only get the clicking. I am not a girl to panic, but any input will be appreciated. And can you tell me why I have brakelights until I turn on the headlights and then when I step on the brakes the tail lights go out except for the light bar at the top?
Thanks,
Duchess55 The clicking sound indicates the starter is defective or, most likely, the starter is not getting enough power to engage the flywheel.
Replace the battery cables. Check and clean the battery earth connection.
Check the solenoid if it's not integral with the starter.
Bob Thanks Bob,
The battery cables were cleaned, but not replaced. The soleniod is integral with the starter and was replaced. I did not have the guy test the new one like he did the old one...today it went to the shop. So hopefully tomorrow I will know something. Somebody said it could be a bad sensor and I have been told my tail light problem lies in the "signal cluster" located in the steering column. I don't know, pretty frustrating. Thanks again for your time.
