I have a 2003 Mitsubish Montero Sport. I purchased it new and now have 98,000 miles on it. I do regular oil changes and replaced all the best including the timing belt. Firestone replaced the belts for me. The fan belt fell off after they replaced it but they fixed it. I've notice a big problem here recently though. On cold days or when my cars has not been started for a while, there is a loud clinking noise coming form the motor. Ater 20-30 seconds while going down the road, the clanking noise stops. It's really loud, almost like change in the dryer at home. I took it to Firestone and they kept it a whole day but couldn't replicate the loud noise. I took it to a Mitsubishi dealer and even got a rental car for a day. The next day they even couldn't replicate the noise.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what is going on? It's only when I start the car after long periods. Every morning is doesn't do it but maybe 4 out of 7 days it does. I want to keep my vehicle since it's almost paid off but sometimes it's so loud when starting that it's embarrassing!
Help! Any suggestions?
It's difficult to determine what the clanking noise is without listening to it. I suggest that you either video tape or record the noise. Maybe someone could recognize it if they hear it. Does it do it in or out of gear? What part of the engine does it sound like it is coming from? Does the noise have a rhythm to it? Does it change if you increase the engine rpm? Is the ac on or off when the noise is occurring? Doesn't change when you put in gear or out.
Sounds like it's coming form the lower engine. Someone said maybe a bearing or something, then another said maybe wrong fan belt? They did replace the fan belt.
It has no rhythm or does not go up or down when driving.
It did it this morning. The ac does not affect the noise. I think I will have to record it like you said.
It doesn't matter if you drive, just within 20-30 seconds, the noise starts to ease off then goes away and the car sounds normal. Help?Car Repair Talk's forum.
